DAOSpace：From infrastructure to collective decisions
After more than a decade of development history, blockchain infrastructures, in addition to public chains, DeFi, NFT, and decentralized storage, have welcomed a new member — DAO, a new decentralized organization of the social structure of the digital world.
In essence, DAOs extend the minimal granularity of trust to the collective decision-making level of the community. By empowering independent individual nodes, DAOs enable co-managed organizational functions, of which the management of smart contracts is an important one, for managing open source infrastructure applications or shared assets.
As one of the hot topics in Web3, DAO has risen from infrastructure to collective decision making and then to a governance idea. Starcoin, the first permissionless blockchain in the Move ecosystem, has recently launched its own platform-based product in the DAO space, DAOSpace.
Fairness and transparency of DAO as an infrastructure
DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organization, which at its core is a way to make collective decisions in a more transparent, decentralized and trust-minimized way than traditional organizations.
Based on the nature of using blockchain-based smart contracts, DAO becomes a form of organization with contracts as the underlying foundation. Smart contracts solidify and automate the specifics of their decision execution and ownership allocation in code form and are protected by a network of decentralized nodes. At the same time, due to the public auditable nature of smart contract code and the openness and transparency of DAO rules to all members, tampering by internal members or external entities can be effectively prevented, ensuring the fairness and transparency and security of DAO as the characteristics of infrastructure.
Starcoin’s DAO platform, DAOSpace, is a preacher of the spirit of DAO, hoping to build a decentralized system with people (not power) as the core, based on technology and tools to provide decentralized autonomy, helping people come together under the belief of individual rights and interests, and achieving the freedom to maximize the value of the organization.
DAOSpace adheres to long-termism and has been exploring the implementation of autonomous code-driven executability on DAO’s infrastructure, allowing DAO to reduce bureaucracy and negotiation costs by eliminating the need for permission through smart contracts, and achieving the upgrade from infrastructure to collective decision-making and then to a governance mindset.
DAOSpace: A one-stop platform for codeless customization of DAO
The “autonomy” driven processes in DAO organizations are not completely automatic and require manual actions by users to run. When users vote, elect, or programmers deploy code and debate proposals, humans still need to interact with smart contracts for input to produce output for execution.
DAOSpace’s DAO templates have a built-in SBT-based membership identity system, a governance system for code-driven execution, and support for both off-chain and on-chain voting governance processes, including the following features：
- Off-chain questionnaire-type polling: similar to Snapshot in the ethereum community, which can effectively govern common discussions/resolutions in projects and communities.
- On-chain governance type voting: the contract is automatically executed after the vote is passed, which is more suitable for funding/protocol/contract upgrades and other similar scenarios.
- Voting in the form of snapshots: Snapshots are based on off-chain proof and on-chain verification, which can ensure the validity of voting while maximizing Token’s asset utilization.
Starcoin’s DAOSpace is a one-stop platform for codeless customization of DAOs through DAO templates and combinable plug-in mechanisms. Its inherent technical framework is to develop a framework and tools to meet the needs of different purposes and provide an easy way to combine them in the form of DApps, which can be used out-of-the-box or deeply customized through a freely extensible plug-in system to maximize the needs of users in multiple scenarios.
As one of the earliest infrastructures in the Move ecosystem, DAOSpace aims to facilitate developers to create DAOs that meet the needs of their project scenarios by building a chain-native, integrated DAO service system with scalable, freely combinable, easy and flexible plug-ins.
